Each line is the vendor’s own wording, split from the price capture checked on 2026-09-21. Nothing here is rounded, converted or re-worded — the full sentences stay in the review below. Lines that carry only a price continue the plan named on the line above, in the vendor’s own order.

One-liner: OpenStory is an open-source AI-powered video platform: you feed it a script (or a single sentence) and it breaks it into shots with camera angles, emotion, and continuity tracking, then renders a sequence with characters that stay consistent across scenes. Stack is TanStack Start + Bun; it is not a hosted SaaS you subscribe to — you run it with your own model keys.

What it actually does
The pitch is “script → film”: paste a full script or a one-liner idea, and OpenStory’s pipeline analyzes it with an LLM (through OpenRouter), decomposes it into shots — assigning camera angle, emotional tone, and continuity notes per shot — and generates the visuals and audio through fal.ai models. Character descriptions are carried across scenes, which is the feature that separates it from one-shot text-to-video toys. Style templates (Action, Rom-Com, Sci-Fi, and others) set the visual grammar. Because it is a web front end on open infrastructure, you can swap models at the key layer rather than being locked into one vendor’s generator.
What the marketing (and the source video) got wrong
Two corrections against the Douyin roundup that surfaced this repo — both failed verification:
- “Closed-source”? No. The repository is public under the MIT license, with a push on the day of this check. There is no proprietary-core gate on the client.
- “$20 free on signup”? Not supported. Neither the repository nor openstory.so claims any signup credit. This is consistent with the architecture: OpenStory itself holds no model serving, so there is nothing for it to gift. Your generation spend is billed by fal.ai and OpenRouter against the keys you bring.
Who should use it
Developers and content teams who want a programmable, self-auditable AI video pipeline and already have (or don’t mind getting) fal.ai and OpenRouter keys. Budget honestly: a 5-minute shot-listed video means dozens of generation calls, and the money flows to model providers, not to this project. At 640 stars and under a year of history it is an early-stage tool — expect rough edges; and if you saw “team workspaces” in a demo, note the README still says coming soon.
Repository statistics, license, and stack facts verified against the GitHub API and README on 2026-09-21; the two source-video claims were checked against both repositories and the official site and found unsupported. This entry follows our verification policy: every claim here was checked against primary sources, not copied from other reviews.
