One-liner: CLI-Anything is an open-source (Apache-2.0) generator from the HKUDS lab that turns any software codebase or web API into a complete, tested, agent-friendly command-line interface — structured commands, JSON output, self-documenting --help — through an automated 7-phase pipeline, with a community hub (pip install cli-anything-hub) that installs finished harnesses in one command.

The problem: agents can’t drive real software

Creative suites, office apps and GIS tools expose GUIs; agents either fall back to brittle screenshot-and-click loops or lose access entirely. CLI-Anything’s bet — per its tagline, “Today’s software serves humans. Tomorrow’s users will be agents” — is that the missing layer is a structured text interface, because CLIs are exactly what LLMs operate best: composable commands, --help self-documentation, JSON output, zero pixel-token waste.

How it works

Running /cli-anything ./gimp inside Claude Code (install via /plugin marketplace add HKUDS/CLI-Anything) triggers a 7-phase pipeline that produces a full Python package: command groups, a stateful REPL mode for interactive sessions, a subcommand mode for scripting, tests, docs, and a SKILL.md so agents can discover the harness autonomously. Each generated CLI is yours to extend — /refine expands coverage automatically or you edit the code directly.

The CLI-Hub side covers the other direction: don’t want to generate? cli-hub install <name> pulls one of the community-built harnesses. The registry spans four families per the README:

  • Creative & Media — Blender, GIMP, OBS Studio, Audacity, Krita, Kdenlive, Shotcut, Inkscape, Darktable, LMMS, Ardour
  • Productivity & Docs — LibreOffice, Zotero, Calibre, Joplin, Obsidian
  • Data & Science — QGIS, ChromaDB, Dify
  • Enterprise & DevOps — NextCloud, GitLab, Grafana, Mattermost, NocoDB, Odoo Community, ERPNext, n8n

Desktop-app harnesses wrap the real upstream software (it must be installed), and the project’s demos show agents producing finished artifacts — CAD builds, 3D scenes, captioned video, live GIS — through the generated CLIs.

The caveats

  • The headline numbers are self-reported. 2,461 passing tests and 18 supported apps come from the project’s own README badges; an independent evaluation of harness quality per app does not exist yet (the arXiv tech report is by the authors).
  • Harness quality is per-CLI, not global. A Blender harness and an Odoo harness are different surfaces with different maturity; the hub’s security notes (path-traversal hardening for Sketch, SQLCipher guards for Rekordbox) show review happens, but it is community-paced.
  • Last push 2026-09-22 — active, though not the daily-velocity of a week ago; the news log’s visible entries cluster in spring 2026.
  • Python ≥ 3.10 and upstream app installs put real setup burden on Windows/macOS users outside the demo videos.

FAQ

Does it work without Claude Code? Yes — install paths exist for OpenClaw, Codex, OpenCode, Hermes and nanobot; the hub meta-skill installs via npx skills add HKUDS/CLI-Anything --skill cli-hub-meta-skill.

Is this an MCP server? Different mechanism. MCP exposes tools over a protocol; CLI-Anything compiles a software’s capabilities into an ordinary installed command-line package the agent invokes directly.

Do I have to build the CLI myself? No — pick from the hub (cli-hub install), or run the generator on a codebase the hub lacks.

Is it free? Apache-2.0, free; each wrapped upstream app keeps its own license.
